Collaborative Quilts

I.  Jigsaw Puzzle (designed by Alyssa Clancy)

Every year my church quilting group makes a quilt to raffle at the Women"s Retreat to support Women's Ministries at Pomona Baptist Church. 

The theme this years was "70's".
We went into our stash and combined
oranges, pinks and greens for this retro look.

II.  Chop Stix Strips

The retired teachers from my former school have continued the tradition of making quilts for retirees which we started while we were still working at South Pointe Middle School. We see each other twice a week to work on our own projects but also to plan and piece these two quilts.

Claudia, English and ESL teacher, is moving to Arizona. We took the colors for her quilt from the tile in her new house.

III.  Simply Cakes 1.2.3 (Me and My Sister Designs)

I found these fabrics that reminded me of 50's prints and knew they were perfect for my friend Marsha, who is retiring this year. She has been part of our teacher quilter's group from the beginning and has helped make all the retiree quilts. We will miss her since she will also be moving to Prescott, Arizona but we are already planning a gals quilting retreat to her new home.

I embroidered the names of 87 nations we have traveled to and 

we still have more countries we want to visit!

Hobbling but not tied down

The latest in foot fashion!

I had foot surgery last week. All is going well but it does restrict my independence. I'm using a walker and hopping on my good foot. All should be mended in 6 weeks and another 6 weeks of being careful. 

In the mean time I have finished embroidering the countries we have visited onto the border of the quilt, "AROUND THE WORLD". With my quilting friends here today, I managed to sew on the border. Now to decide on the backing. I have a panel of vintage cruise ships and luggage tags to incorporate. The designing should be fun.

 

Looking forward to handquilting

Ready to hand quilt! The border became quite a dilemma. I wanted to use the kimono fabric my mother bought for me years ago in Japan but once I put it on I knew it wasn't right. It took away from the hexagons. So . . . I ripped . . . and then went back to Quiltsalot to look at her borders. I was surprised that I had enough scraps to cut triangles for a border. Janet of Quiltsalot has had so many inquiries about this quilt that she posted some directions to get you started. The pattern is no longer available. I figured it out by myself, so can you.

"WHIRLIGIG", finding a new home

After moving to California and renting this past year, Tim and Krista are ready to buy a house. I originally made this quilt in 2006 for their master bedroom in NC. This quilt needs a new home!


I had Krista pick out the focus fabric and the pattern first. With them living in North Carolina, she had to trust me to pick other colors to coordinate. The blocks are foundation pieced but by now you know paper piecing is not my favorite. Because of the king size, I decided to make patterns, piece and then square up. You can't tell but they didn't always line up. For me it really simplified and sped up the process.

The pattern is from Quiltmaker March/April '97 called "Party Whirl"
