Mary Mannakee, row 1 ready

I've finished turning and basting the first row of 5 blocks and I'll start hand sewing.

Block 1-D

Block 1-E

A few asked me about the fact that I turned the edges first. The secret is that I used a glue stick, which helps with intricate curves and narrow edges. Look below to see shots of me using this technique. A friend took a class and shared the technique with our group. I used this applique technique in "IRIS and PEONIES",

Have any of you used this method? Would you like more information?

That's a method I haven't seen with the pattern on the right side. It's really interesting and I like the fact that you have all these blocks prepped and ready to go.

Those are perfect. Are you working on clear vinyl? I probably won't be hand appliquing anymore, but I am really curious about that method, Janet. When I did applique by hand, I used freezer paper and glue. It's great how many wonderful methods quilters figure out! Carol

I use whatever method works well for the project I am working on. Mostly I needle turn but sometimes I use the glue stick, or sometimes press the seam edge under with an iron.

I like your fabric choices in the first pictue. You have proved that it doesn't have to be boring fabric.

I tried leaving you a comment but it didn't work so here goes again.
I like that you have the edges turned under and and the pieces basted down. Is gluing under the edges quicker than doing needle turn applique? And does gluing the edges make it hard to get a needle through?

All of your blocks are so beautiful - you've done a great job with the combination of the red and green fabrics. I need to be patient enough to turn down my edges first - I usually needleturn, but I'm sure your way gives much better results.
