My Grandmother would have been 130 this month. She lived with us during most of my childhood and died at 87. I took this picture with my "Brownie" at age 12 and Grandma 81. She moved to LA, California by herself at 21 in 1900. As a seamstress and shop owner, she would travel to wealthy families sewing dresses for all the women in the family. She was a very independant woman until she met my Grandfather and married at age 30. Being her youngest grandchild, I would sit at her feet where she read to me, told me stories, made doll clothes and taught me to sew. I was fascinated with her Hat Needle Case so at age 12 she helped me make one.

May grandma's soul rest in peace. A lovely photo of her ... what wonderful memories of her you have. And, to have her 'teach' you is even more wonderful ... TTFN ~Marydon
I like them both. what's keeping the thimble in place in the top of the hat?
What wonderful memories and to actually have something tangible to mark them is priceless.
Great to have such nice memories of her, I think generation after generation teaching each other to sew is so much better than school sewing.
Lovely post, Janet. Grandmas are special people - I did love going to my grandma's house. And I feel my granddaughters think I'm pretty special, too. No one in my family sewed or quilted, though, so don't know where I got the love of needlework. Your little hat pincushion and needlecase are just precious! Memories are wonderful!
Lovely memories Janet..
I never knew my Grandmothers..
I love to share time with my grand daughters and leave them some nice memories like this..

My grandma was my favorite person in the whole world. When I was a little girl, I would spend my summers with her on her farm. She used to let me play with her treadle sewing machine, and I would love to sit at her feet while she would crochet. I miss her! Thanks for sharing your story.
What a wonderful tribute to your grandma....what special people those grandmas were! and now here we are in that role!...and loving it.
Thanks for sharing!
