Retirees

It has become tradition for my teacher/quilting friends and I to make a quilt for each retiree from our school. It has been 8 years since I retired. Now that the rest of the quilting teachers are retired, we met at my house once a week.  This year we made quilts for 4 teachers and I was majorly involved with 2:

Alan Everman, computer teacher, who is an avid tennis player and

Terry Currie, Social Studies/6th, who is moving to North Carolina.

The snowball pattern was perfect for showing off the large tennis designs. The hardest part was finding a yellow-green print to match the tennis balls.

My friend, Debbie, found 2 paper pieced Cardinal patterns. The challenge was enlarging the pattern to match the 10" leaf block.

I found this 10" pattern on-line to make the maple leaves.

Debbie is gifted in using up scraps to make an interesting backing. We managed to make this quilt totally from our stash and scraps.

We still have a few of the original faculty that has yet to retire and more quilts to make.

"Tree House"

Missy, the middle child of my sister's 3 girls, finally decided what quilt she wanted Aunt Janet to make. She chose the pattern from The Modern Quilt Workshop by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr. Her choice of colors are my favorites too so I found all the fabrics in my stash. The pattern is easy (stack & slash) but the selection and placement of colors are key for success.

She only wanted a throw for her sofa so I was able to machine quilt it myself. I marked the angles and a variety of widths with masking tape, sewing from long edge to long edge. I went back and sewed 1/2" next to each of the angles echoing the brown sashing widths.

The backing is a cozy flannel with the insertion of the left over blocks (7"x12").

"SPRING & FALL" Reversible Table Runner

This pattern was presented by one member of our class so I don't have a source for you.
1) Cut iron-on batting the desired length of runner. Position the center square of focus fabric on point.
2) Turn over, center the first strip of the opposite fabric from point to point. Sew additional strips alternating on either side until center square is quilted in place. trim to match size and shape of front square 3) seam 4 small triangles of 2nd focus to edges of trimmed strips. Press in place. 4) Turn over to 1st side, seam strips outward from center, automatically quilting triangles on 2nd side. 5) Con't alternating medium and small triangles and strips until desired length. Hint: Draw perpendicular and diagonal lines on batting to keep the runner square.
